Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”.
This week my husband and I received a phone call from a dear friend of ours who is a widower. When my husband answered the call we were surprised to hear that her son was found dead in his apartment. She was so shaken up we barely understood what she was trying to say to us. At the best she could she explained that he was supposed to help her move on Monday and when she tried to reach him there was no response. Later that day she and her son’s Pastor went to his apartment and found him dead. She called us the following day and informed us that her son passed due to a heart attack. He was around our age probably in his late 40s. Before his passing, he called my husband on Sunday inviting him to evangelize to the homeless and drug users. My husband was unable to go do due to another commitment. However, he did not know this would be the last time he has spoken to him. His mother shared with us that her son did go out to evangelize that same day and was used by G-D to witness salvation to a homeless man and also found him a place to stay. She added how he died doing what he loved the most and this was his last act on earth. We hear about death all the time but when someone we know dies we see life from a different perspective. It makes us look at our lives and wonder what we can do differently.
Reflecting on my friend’s son's life, I was reminded of the scripture Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”. What does this mean as humans we are bound by time therefore our days on earth are numbered and we must Shema/Obey and listen to The Adonai and allow him to teach us how to use our time on earth wisely. We should strive to live every day doing what we were purpose to do while we can. As humans, we think we have all the time in the world to do what G-D has purposed for us to do. The average person is not sitting down and counting how many days they have on earth. But what if we did? Would we love more, procrastinate less, forgive others, laugh more, and live on purpose. I did a google search asking how many days the average person lives and the answer was 27,375 days. When you look at it, that way this is not a lot of time. But our focus should be on what we do with the time we have. Each day we should strive to live more on purpose working towards fulfilling His vision for our lives.
Tomorrow is not promised and we never know when our time is near. We should live like it’s our last day on earth. I’m not saying we should live in fear and try to count how many days we have left on earth. Everything the Lord does has a purpose and we were made for His purpose (Ephesians 2:10).
Another scripture that comes to mind is John 9:4 “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work”. Yeshua knew his time on earth was numbered and He only had a short window of time to fulfill His calling. He knew in advance that He was going to be betrayed, falsely judge, and crucified. However, before His night came, where He could not work; He made it His business to do the will of The Abba/Father mentioned in (Luke 4:18).
In closing, I encourage you as a believer in Yeshua Hamashiach to use your time on earth wisely. We may not know when our number is up. But just like the young man I mentioned above. He died doing what he loved to do to and His last act on earth was witnessing to a lost soul. Meditate on this what will be your last act on earth? Don’t let Him find you sleeping and your work undone (Mark 13:36)
And what does it profit a man to lose His soul and gain the whole world (Mark 8:36)
I also dedicate this week’s devotion to our dear friend Sister Mae Moore and her son Torrie Pattani. We are sorry for your loss and may The Lord give you peace as you go through this trying time.
Shabbat Shalom
You’re Achoth/Sister
